Introduction

Euskara is the original language of Berango, which has passed from generation to generation.

It is one of the most important cultural treasures of the town, still spoken by most of the inhabitants.

The Basque dialect from Berango is the vizcaíno, more precisely the Plentzia variety. This variety is spoken, more or less, in all the region from the Txorierri to Lemoniz on the coast and to Mungia in the interior.

The Basque dialect spoken in Berango has its own characteristics, as it is inbetween two subvarieties, i.e., those of the Txorierri and Uribe Kosta. Among its most important features, we can mention its peculiar vocabulary, its special way of shortening some sounds, as well as its accent and grammar; all of them having made it possible to keep the basic features of the original Basque spoken here.
